Wastewater Treatment Basics Step 5

Sludge Dewatering, Really the Final Step

Basic Wastewater Treatment Flow Chart Sludge Dewatering

Sludge Dewatering or Sludge Treatment

The final step for industrial wastewater treatment is to dewater your solids sludge for reuse or disposal. This sludge dewatering can reclaim more water for recycling and can also make or break your disposal costs, as water is very heavy.

Sludge dewatering equipment typically uses a physical compression process of some type to squeeze the water out of the sludge although plain old sludge drying is sometimes used. Solar sludge drying generally doesn't reclaim any water and sludge driers can have associated heating costs.

With an optimized system, your sludge is already low in water content and dewaters easily. This is why wastewater optimization is so important.

Since water is so heavy (8.345404 pounds per gallon & 62.42796 pounds per cubic foot) your sludge disposal costs are largely determined by the efficiency of your dewatering of sludge. More leftover water not only means less wastewater recycling, but higher sludge cake weight and the associated higher disposal costs.

Therefore, high quality sludge dewatering equipment can really improve your bottom line, not just in disposal costs, but also in operator costs. Plate & Frame Presses, Screw Presses, Rotary Screens and Dewatering Belts are examples of sludge dewatering equipment.

After your sludge dewatering is complete your wastewater treatment process is pretty much over. You can see how an holistic approach that seeks to find the weak links in your process can really have a positive domino effect in all aspects of your wastewater treatment system.
