Industrial Wastewater Treatment Success Stories
Wineries: Successfully Treating Winery Wastewater
Large Wineries - Odors Eliminated
The local RWQCB and the town of Madera required this facility to decrease the effluent BOD levels to reduce the odors coming from their spray fields. Integrated Engineers, Inc was selected to assist the engineering staff in determining the extent of BOD removal from the many wine making operations. It was determined that isolation of the wine filtering would remove the majority of the pounds of BOD generated in the wastewater. Sumps were installed to capture this high strength wastewater and Integrated Engineers, Inc. provided a turnkey BioReactor to treat the 50,000 gpd wastewater with an average BOD of 15,000 ppm. Result: No more odors in their spray fields.

The RWQCB submitted several notices of violation for excessive odor levels beyond the facilities spray field boundaries. The staff selection process chose Integrated Engineers, Inc as the vendor to provide engineering design and construction management of the BioReactor system capable of treating 350,000 gpd of winery wastewater. Due to the limited space and quantity of wastewater, Integrated Engineers, Inc. designed a tandem blower system capable of aerating at a depth of 36 feet. Therefore, the facility was able to use taller tanks and reduce the foot print. Result:: No more odors.
Small Winery
Met Discharge Limits With Small BioReactor
The bottling facility needed to reduce their BOD from 6,000 ppm to 250 ppm or less. Having recently moved into the leased building, it was soon realized that the POTW was not willing to let them discharge unless they could meet the 250 ppm BOD level. Integrated Engineers, Inc. was retained to provide a packaged BioReactor to fit into their parking lot to reduce the 10,000 gpd wine water to meet the discharge limit.
Medium Sized Wineries
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) Reduction
The RWQCB required a wastewater treatment system to reduce the BOD going to the surrounding vineyards to the state limit of 100 lbs/day/acre. Integrated Engineers, Inc. was awarded the turnkey contract (design/build) as well as permitting for a BioReactor consisting of an in-ground concrete design with flow equalization, pH control, pre aeration basin, aeration basin, secondary clarifier, aerobic sludge digester, and rotary sludge dewatering screen.

This de-barreling facility was required to install a system for reduction of their BOD from 5,000 ppm to less than 100 ppm prior to being allowed to discharge. Integrated Engineers, Inc provided turnkey system to treat the 10,000 gpd of tank barrel rinse water with the effluent BOD averaging less than 30 ppm BOD. The system included a prefilter, EQ Tank with pH adjustment and coarse bubble aeration, duplex BioReactor Tanks, secondary clarifier, sludge holding tank and effluent flow meter.
