All About Flocculants & More

Flocculant

No discussion of flocculation, flocculating agents, flocculators or flocculent would be complete without a little discourse on flocculants, the sometimes proprietary wastewater treatment chemicals that are used to kick start flocculation to improve efficiencies. If you have the right one, your process can positively smoke the competition, and make environmental compliance a breeze.

What is a Flocculant?

According to dictionary.com Flocculant means:

–noun, a chemical for producing flocculation of suspended particles, as to improve the plasticity of clay for ceramic purposes. Origin: floccule + -ant

Pretty straightforward, a flocculant is a chemical that will cause flocculation, or clump up the suspended solids making them into floc. This is the kick starter of flocculation, and sometimes multiple kick starters depending on your process.

Flocculants in Your Industrial Wastewater Treatment

We covered a little about flocculants in the flocculation and flocculent sections but here we'll go a little more into why some work better than others.

If your flocculant doesn't provide encapsulation you just may wind up with a floc that you have difficulty disposing of or dewatering.

You may also find that you are using multiple chemicals, when in fact one would suffice. You may be using a flocculant that isn't up to the task for your application, even when the same flocculant may perform well in other applications.

There are many, many types of flocculants so it's very important you consult with experts when choosing the best flocculant and flocculators for your application.

Some flocculants will encapsulate your solids, with non-hazardous flocculant, even hazardous solids. This means you will render a hazardous substance non-hazardous, for easy disposal, reuse, environmental compliance and an eco-friendly socially responsible wastewater treatment process..

As you can imagine, various flocculants perform better with various suspended solids, pH and other wastewater factors all of which need to be addressed by your wastewater engineering consultants.

Bottom line is this, you want one chemical to do it all if at all possible, you want non-hazardous encapsulation and you want easy dewatering for drier cake and lower disposal or reuse costs.

Flocculants For Kick Starting Your Flocculation

All of the above can be achieved with the right wastewater optimization and analysis followed by the implementation of the right flocculant and flocculator.

From the photo below you can see what excellent flocculation looks like and clearly see why you need a top proprietary flocculant developed by experts.

To get the most out of your flocculation process high performance flocculants will deliver top results and higher profits on an ongoing basis.

Flocculant Conclusion

This wasn't meant to be an exhaustive technical discourse with boring terminology and hard to comprehend chemical parlance but rather a quick discussion of the broad strokes of high performance flocculants and how you can achieve the best results in your wastewater treatment process.

That objective has been achieved and we hope you have a better understanding of flocculants, how they function and how they are applied to wastewater treatment in practical terms.
