The use of special additives to raw wastewater to cause flocculation or clumping to help settling before the primary treatment such as screening.
The primary purpose (pun intended) is to increase efficiency by giving the opportunity to remove upwards of 90% of the solids, suspended or otherwise, that make up the BOD constituents in the influent. Cuts costs throughout the remainder of the process.
Advanced Primary Treatment works in many different ways, it's a catch all term really, but is mainly the addition of additional wastewater chemicals (coagulants (ferric chloride), flocculants, flotation clarifiers with air bubbles as used in a Honolulu Wastewater Plant) to reduce TSS in the primary sedimentation phase of wastewater treatment thus reducing BOD for the biological processes following.
