Biological Wastewater Treatment
The Process of Biological Wastewater Treatment

(Each box is a link to relevant information)
Biological wastewater treatment probably needs no definition but we will anyway. Biological wastewater treatment is the treating of wastewater utilizing biological processes, such as digestion by bacteria.
A classic example is the residential septic tank, an anaerobic biological wastewater treatment system. Anaerobic means without oxygen or in the absences of oxygen.
Another classic example is the oxidation ditch and the extended aeration packaged plant commonly used in municipal wastewater treatment. Sequential batch reactors are also a biological wastewater treatment system. These are aerobic systems meaning the opposite of anaerobic systems, as in with oxygen present or requiring oxygen.
All of these systems use bacterial activity to clarify the wastewater, breaking down, digesting or reducing the solids so they float or settle out of the wastewater to be skimmed off or separated from the water for sludge dewatering.
When looking to optimize your biological wastewater treatment a number of factors need to be considered, not the least of which is probably pH of the water to harbor or facilitate the desirable microbial activity.
Another factor is the oxygen content of the water. Typically wastewater aeration is used to boost the oxygen levels so that aerobic bacteria can thrive.
Generally, aerobic bacteria is much more desirable and overwhelmingly biological wastewater treatment utilizes aerobic digestion with the exception of the anaerobic septic tank. (Aerobic septic tanks systems are considered superior and are becoming much more common.)
Biological wastewater treatment can be used stand alone as in the example above and can also be part of a chemical wastewater treatment system when the wastewater is high in soluble organics. Sometimes this is used in addition to other liquid solid separation, sometimes in addition to liquid solids separation.
Although focusing primarily on chemical wastewater treatment, Integrated Engineers Inc can assist you in all your biological wastewater treatment needs either directly or referring you to one of our expert partners.
